Keepsake Handprint Christmas Ornament with HeatnBond

Welcome to ornament week at Thermoweb! Carla here from Creatin’ in the Sticks and I’ve been busy decorating our house for Christmas. One of my favorite things about this time of year is pulling out all the handmade ornaments from past years and bringing back all those memories. This ornament is simple in design and fast to make, but is truly a keepsake that will be fun to see every year. Can you imagine making one every year and comparing how much a little one has grown? Let’s make a reverse applique handprint.

Keepsake Handprint Christmas Ornament

Finished size: small child – 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ (the size will depend on the hand pattern)

Supplies:

HEATnBOND® FUSIBLE Fleece

HeatnBond® Lite iron on adhesive

StitchnSew EZ Quilt Block Sheets

Aurifil thread: 50 wt. (#2024, #2270)

White fabric

Christmas fabric (Windham Fabrics – O Christmas Tree by Whistler Studios)

1/4″ ribbon for hanging and a bow

Iron: (I love my Oliso Pro)

Inkjet Printer

Magic marker, pencil, and paper

general sewing supplies: scissors, pins, sewing machine, etc.

Handprint Keepsake Christmas Ornament Instructions:

Step 1 – Prepare the pattern

Trace a little hand with a pencil onto a plain piece of paper.

Using a magic marker, trace around the hand then flip the paper over for the reverse. This is your hand pattern. Next, measure the hand and add 1″ to the height and width to determine the size of a square to draw around the hand.

This hand drawing is about 4″ x 4″ so the square needs to be 5″ x 5″. (4″ + 1″ = 5″) Draw the 5″ square centering the hand. Darken the hand and the square with the magic marker for easier tracing.

Step 2 – Cut the fabrics and interfacings

Cut 1 white square of fabric 5″ x 5″ (this is the measurement from step 1). Two 5″ x 5″ fabric squares of the Christmas fabric are needed. Next, cut one 5″ square of HeatnBond® Lite iron-on adhesive and two 4 1/2″ squares of HEATnBOND® FUSIBLE Fleece.

Step 3 – Bond interfacings to fabrics

Centering the HEATnBOND® FUSIBLE Fleece on the wrong side of 1 Christmas fabric and the white square, bond the fleece by following the package instructions. Trace the hand pattern on the paper side of the HeatnBond® Lite iron-on adhesive and fuse to the wrong side of the last Christmas fabric square.

Step 4 – Reverse Applique the hand to the ornament front

Cut the hand out following the drawn lines on the HeatnBond® Lite iron-on adhesive backed fabric. Try to cut a smooth line so the hand that is cut out can be used for another ornament. (Maybe one for grandma?) Peel the backing paper off the square with the hand cut out and fuse it to the right side of the white fabric square

After the square is cool, stitch around the hand on the Christmas fabric with a zigzag or blanket stitch with Aurifil thread 50 wt. #2024.

Step 5 – Stitch the name and date

StitchnSew EZ Quilt Block Sheets make it easy to stitch the name and date to the ornament. Print the name and date onto a StitchnSew EZ Quilt Block Sheet (this one is Lucinda Calligraphy in size 24 font).

Pin the printed sheet to the front of the middle of the hand. Stitch a straight or triple stitch by lowering the stitch length and tracing the letters on the quilt block sheet with Aurifil 50 wt thread (#2270). After all, stitching is complete, simply tear the sheet away.

Tip: Tweezers work perfectly to remove little bits on the quilted sheet.

Step 6 – Create ribbon ornament hanger.

Fold 8″ length of ribbon in half and stitch it to the upper left corner of the ornament 1/8″ from the edge and 1/4″ in from the corner. Pin the ribbon out-of-the-way of the next seam.

Step 7 – Stitch ornament together

Lay the fleece backed Christmas fabric square on top of the ornament front with right sides together and pin. Stitch 1/4″ from the edge around the square leaving a 2 1/2″ opening. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end. After stitching, trim the corner seam allowances and turn it right side out. Now, stitch the opening shut and top stitch around the ornament. Finish the ornament by tying a ribbon bow to the top.
