"Foiled Watermelon" Decofoil Block of the Month

Hi everyone! It’s Kim Lapacek of Persimon Dreams here! I’m back with the tenth Mystery ‘Block of the Month’ featuring DecoFoils!

If you haven’t joined in the fun yet don’t worry – it’s not too late! These blocks are all 8-inches and go together really quickly. Each block will be whimsical and fun and a perfect way to use up your scraps. In the end you’ll have twelve 8-inch blocks that will make an adorable wall hanging OR you can use the blocks to make mini quilts, table runners and pillows! With the hot days we’ve been having … I though this would be a perfect block to commemorate summer!

“Foiled Watermelon Block”

Supplies:

Sky – 6.5″ x 8.5″ fabric
Ground– 2.5″ x 8.5″ fabric
Watermelon “meat” (melon/pink-peach fabric)
- (1) 4.0” x 5.5”
- Heat N Bond® Lite: – just under (1) 4.0” x 5.5”
Watermelon light rind (lighter green fabric)
- (1) 4.0″ x 6.0″
- Heat N Bond® Lite: – just under (1) 4.0” x0”
Watermelon dark outer rind (outer green fabric)
- (1) 4.25″ x 6.0″
- Heat N Bond® Lite: – just under (1) 4.25” x 6.0”
Watermelon outside (outer green patterned fabric)
- (1) 1.0″ x 3.0″
- Heat N Bond® Lite: – just under (1) 1.0” x 3.0”

Directions

Start by piecing the background of our block this morning. Take your 6.5″ x 8.5″ piece of sky fabric and sew it to the 2.5″ x 8.5″ piece of ground fabric. I truly just grabbed two fabrics for this background … you could go anyway you’d like … just try to contrast with the fabrics you choose for the watermelon.

Press towards the ground fabric.

Now – take the templates you printed out after you downloaded it for free from my Craftsy pattern page and trace all the pieces of the watermelon on to the corresponding Heat n Bond® lite pieces. Trim around the shapes but not too close to any lines.

Press each Heat n Bond® lite shape to the wrong side of the corresponding fabric. Cut each shape on the lines you drew. Peel the fusible paper off each fabric piece. Do this now so you don’t forget to do it before you do your final press.

Layout the pieces of the watermelon (with the back paper peeled off the fusible) in a manner that pleases you.The outer rind pieces will layer over the inner watermelon meat so the background doesn’t show through.

The outside piece of watermelon rind goes UNDER the rind pieces. This is a bit putsy but just be patient and get the pieces the way you like them. Fuse the watermelon to the background block.

Trace the watermelon seeds onto iCraft® Deco Foil™ Hot Melt Adhesive.

I have to be honest … when cutting out my seeds I did a lot of “free form” cutting. I have a template of seeds for those who are not comfortable cutting there own but in this case, just take a small chunk of Deco Foil™ Hot Melt Adhesive and start cutting the seed shapes.

Lay them out on the watermelon in a way that pleases you. You can see that I didn’t always follow the lines on the seeds!

Take a Pressing Sheet and lay it over the Hot Melt Adhesive seed shapes. Press for 30 seconds. Let the Deco Foil™ Hot Melt adhesive cool down. Seriously, let it cool down. In fact – for this block, I went to my sewing machine and did all the fancy blanket stitches around the edges of the pieces that were fused down with the Heat N Bond® Lite Fusible.

If you stitched down your watermelon your block should be cool … but if not … let it cool down even more. And once it’s 100% cooled down, peel the paper off.

Lay pieces of section of black DecoFoil over the seed shapes.

Take a Pressing Sheet and lay it over the DecoFoil. Press for 30 seconds. Let it cool down.

Once it is completely cooled down, peel the Deco Foil off the block. Voila!

If you haven’t already stitched down the fused pieces be sure to do that now.

You now have beautiful “Foiled Watermelon” Block!
