Hi everyone!  It’s Kim Lapacek of Persimon Dreams here!  I have something super exciting to share with you!  Today is the first day of the Mystery ‘Block of the Month’ I’m sharing with you that will feature Deco Foils! Yes!  I’m designing a new 8″ finished quilt block each month for an entire year.

I hope you decide to join in the fun!  Each block will be whimsical and fun and a perfect way to use up your scraps.  In the end you’ll have twelve 8-inch blocks that will make an adorable wall hanging OR you can use the blocks to make mini quilts, table runners and wall hangings!  Feel free to copy the button above and add it to your blog to share with everyone the fun we’re going to have with this quilt along.

Okay – time to reveal the first block …

“Wish Upon an Apple Tree”

Wish Upon an Apple Tree

Supplies:

Directions

base
Start by piecing the background of our block this morning.  Take your 6.5″ x 8.5″ piece of sky fabric and sew it to the 2.5″ x 8.5″ piece of grass fabric.

base
Press towards the grass fabric.

heat n bond

Now – take the templates you printed out after you downloaded it for free from my Craftsy pattern page and trace the shapes on to the corresponding Heat n Bond® lite pieces.  Trim around the shapes but not too close to any lines.

Press each Heat n Bond lite shape to the wrong side of the corresponding fabric.  Cut each shape on the lines you drew.

trunk
Peel the fusible paper off each fabric piece.  Do this now so you don’t forget to do it before you do your final press.

Now it’s time to lay out each piece how we want it before we press it into it’s final spot.  Start with the trunk as everything will be based off that.

big tree leaves
The next piece to place is the largest of the leaves.  In this step, weave one of the branches in front of the larges leaf.

tree
Place the rest of the leaf pieces where you’d like them.  Once you’re happy with the placement of each piece press down securely.

star punch
I included a circle and star template you can trace if you want to on the Wish Upon a Tree Applique Template OR you can get a fun small star punch and punch out the shapes you want from the iCraft® Deco Foil™ Hot Melt Adhesive.

tree 2
Place whichever shapes you chose to use for your apples on the tree in a way that is pleasing to you.

pressing sheet
Take a Pressing Sheet and lay it over the shapes.  Press for 30 seconds.   Let the Deco Foil™ Hot Melt adhesive cool down.  Seriously, let it cool down.

Let it cool down even more.  And once it’s 100% cooled down, peel the paper off.

red deco foil
Lay a piece of Red DecoFoil over your tree so it covers all of the stars/apples completely.

pressing sheet
Take a Pressing Sheet and lay it over the DecoFoil.  Press for 30 seconds.  Let it cool down.

decofoil
This is secretly my favorite part.  Once I have let everything cool down properly … I get to peel off the sheet of DecoFoil.  I just love seeing not only my project but the missing stars in the DecoFoil!  So much fun!

All the hard parts are done for the September ‘Wish Upon an Apple Tree’ block.

Wish Upon an Apple Tree

The final step is to blanket stitch around each of the pieces you fused down with the Heat N Bond Lite Fusible.    I’m so in love with this fun apple tree!  I hope you like it and I hope you decide to join in the fun of this Block of the Month!

That is such a cute tree. I’ve never seen one with rectangular shapes for the leaves before. Thanks for the pattern and tutorial. The foil looks like fun.

Wondering when the next block will be out. Is there a schedule somewhere? Thanks.
