Men’s Shirt Re-Fashion

Hi!  Amanda from Jedi Craft Girl here!!  I have been loving the book, Never Been Stitched (and so has my 14-year old daughter….she’s upstairs
making a family of octopus out of jersey knit and Styrofoam balls!)

This inspiring book has so many fun and quick projects to make with fabric.  One of the projects featured in the book is a tutorial for making a girl’s skirt from a man’s button front shirt.  This project just screamed my name.  Unfortunately, hubby had recently gone through his shirts to weed out the old ones.  So, a quick trip to the thrift store did the trick.  I am totally into navy blue and green this spring.  Since the skirt is made from a man’s shirt, I knew I wanted to make a coordinating shirt to pull the look together and make it a touch more girly.  I think it turned out super cute!

My shirt was a men’s XL, and it made a perfect girl’s size 8 skirt.

Of course, it would be easy to size it down, but there was not much extra if you are looking to make a larger skirt – I would buy a larger shirt 🙂  The only sewing is the top where the elastic casing is.  The pattern said to purchase a shirt with a straight hem, no curves.  It’s hard to find a shirt that doesn’t curve on the bottom, I cut off the curves and sewed a straight hem in the bottom – Therm O Web Hem tape would work fabulously too!!

To make the shirt, you can download my whale drawing here.  Print the whale out on one of these EZ print Heat n Bond® Lite sheets.

Roughly cut around the whale and the heart.  Iron it to the wrong side of the extra shirt material (sleeve).  I made the heart out of a scrap of navy blue dot fabric. Cut both images on the pattern line and peel off the backing.  Place as desired on the shirt and press into place, heat-setting the adhesive.  Sew an outline stitch around the appliqué pieces and hand sew a button eye onto the whale.  The whole project took less than an hour!
