Hi, It’s Jen from The Smitten Chicken.  I’m here today to share a fun embroidery project with you.  I recently got a new sewing machine.  It is also an embroidery machine and comes with a lot of fun embroidery projects.  One of the projects included is this amazing unicorn designed by Tula Pink.  When your little girl loves unicorns, you just have to make her a jacket!  And what better jacket than a Tula Pink Unicorn!

The tricky thing about Tula Pink embroidery and a lot of embroidery designs is that the stitching is very dense.  It can cause a lot of problems while you are stitching.  I want to let you in on a few tips I learned along the way!

Tula Pink Embroidery Unicorn Project

First, you will need to gather your supplies.  They include:

Embroidery Thread

StitchnSew Stabilizer (Thermoweb has numerous weights.  Use what is appropriate for your fabric choice.)

StitchnSew Non-Woven Wash-away Water Soluble Topping

Embroidery Machine

The first thing you need to check is your bobbin thread.  The weight of your bobbin should be less than the weight of your embroidery thread.  Typically most bobbin thread is 60 weight.  Tip:  With something as dense as this unicorn, you need a lighter weight thread in the bobbin.  This reduces bulk and keeps the stitches on the back and not pulling through to the front.

The StitchnSew Non-Woven Wash-away Water Soluble Topping was a lifesaver.  The jean jacket that I used had a fair amount of spandex in it.  On a practice piece, the stitches were sinking into the fabric and causing all sorts of issues with my machine.  I then used this Topping!  This keeps the stitches from sinking into the jacket.

I also used a stabilizer on the back.  You need to choose the stabilizer that best suits your fabric.  Thermoweb offers stabilizers for lightweight fabric all the way to heavyweight.  You also need to consider the number of stitches you will be stitching.  Tip:  A heavy-duty stabilizer can also be used for a dense project, not just a heavyweight fabric.

Between the stabilizer and the Topping, the stitches were PERFECT!  It is like an embroidery sandwich!  After you are done stitching, simply cut away the excess topping and soak it for up to 2 minutes.  And it disappears!  It is like magic!  Topping done and perfect stitches are left!

Unicorn Embroidery Jacket

I have one happy unicorn loving little girl!  She hasn’t taken her jacket off yet!

Have you tried embroidery yet?  I think this is the beginning of a lot of fun new projects at The Smitten Chicken!
