Spring is in the air and this girl is breaking out the flower vases and brightening up our home decor.  What better way to “springify” our home than with some new table linens.  Fabric napkins are better for the environment and are so much prettier than paper.  They are a cinch to make too.

The napkins are reversible with no exposed hems and the napkin rings are super easy to make with HeatnBond interfacing and Fabric Fuse.  The bright colors of Windham Fabric’s Hello Jane by Allison Harris are perfect to bring spring blooms to a pretty table setting.

Step 1:

Centering the 3” x 7” piece of interfacing on the wrong side of 4” x 8” piece of fabric, bond the interfacing by following the manufacturer’s directions.

Laying the fabric on the ironing surface wrong side up, press the excess fabric over the interfacing on the long sides.  Next press one short end over the interfacing.

Now, fold the strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, sandwiching the long raw edges in the middle and pin.

One of the short ends is finished.  Stitch along the side with the 2 folded edges, starting ½” from the edge (where the short side is folded).  Continue the stitching to the end that is unfinished.

The next step is to form the ring.  Bring the raw edges to the folded edges and tuck the raw edges into the opened fold end and pin.

Flatten the ring to stitch close to the fold to encase the raw edges.

Step 2:

Trace one of each napkin ring flower template from the pattern sheet on the paper side of HeatnBond lite and fuse to the wrong side of the fabrics.  The flower is fused on a 3 ½” square, the center circle is fused on the 2” square, and the leaf is fused to a 2 ½” square.  Cut each piece around the traced line.

Fuse the interfacing pieces to the backs of the 2 remaining fabric squares following the package instructions.  Now, lay them on an ironing surface, interfacing side up.  Peel the backing paper off the HeatNBond lite flower and place it on top of the 3 ½” interfacing square right side up.  Peel the center circle paper off and place the circle in the middle of the flower with the adhesive side down.  Now fuse the flower and center to the interfacing following package directions.  Peel the backing paper from the leaf and fuse it to the 2 ½” interfacing.

Top stitch around the flower, the center, and the leaf in black thread.  Next, cut around the flower and the leaf.

Step 3:

Using Fabric Fuse quick bond adhesive, glue the leaf to the top of the napkin ring where the seams meet.

Next, glue the flower on top of the seam.  Let the napkin ring dry for 4-6 hours.  While it dries, make a matching napkin.

Instructions for 1

Step 1:

Trace one of each napkin flower template from the pattern sheet on the paper side of HeatnBond lite and fuse to the wrong side of the fabrics.  The flower is fused on a 3 ½” square, the center circle is fused on the 2” square, and the leaf is fused to a 2 ½” square.  Cut each piece around the traced line.

Peel the backing paper off the HeatnBond Lite flower and leaf and place in one of the corners of the 16 1/2″ white square using the key as a reference with the adhesive side down.  Be sure there is at least 1/4″ of space around the flower to sew the seams of the napkin.  Peel the center circle backing paper off and place, adhesive side down in the center of the flower.  Fuse the pieces all at once following the package instructions.  Now, top stitch around the flower, leaf, and center with Aurifil thread.

Step 2:

The next step is to pin the 16 1/2″ squares of fabric, right sides together and pin.

Next, stitch around all 4 sides leaving a 3 1/2″ opening for turning right side out.  Push the corners out and press the opening closed.  Press the napkin well.  Finally, edge stitch around the napkin and then top stitch 1/4″ from the edge.

Happy Spring!!
