Hello crafty friends. Today I’m sharing a fun and funky mixed media shadow box that’s just in time for Valentine’s Day. This is one of those projects that you have in your mind but then it takes on a life of its own and becomes something totally different. I hope this will inspire you to play with your ThermOWeb products to create a fun mixed media piece of art.

Let’s Get Started on this Shadow Box!

STEP ONE:

Start with a wood home décor piece (mine was from a local dollar store). Use the backside to create a shadow box by painting the inside pink and drilling a small hole at the top left corner to add fairy lights.

Hint: The backside of a stretched canvas from a dollar store will work as a shadow box as well.

STEP TWO:

Next, thread fairy lights through the hole and wrap around the inside of the shadow box. Secure them with a small piece of tape on each side.

Cut a small piece of the Dainty Hearts Clear Designer Toner Sheets and foil it using Radiant Red Gina K. Designs Fancy Foils. To foil, place a Foil Transfer Sheet (dull side down) over the Clear Toner Sheet (you can feel the raised hearts on the clear toner sheet – that’s the side you foil) and run through your laminator or foiling machine pursuant to machine directions.

Hint: You can change the color of your fairy lights by adding alcohol ink to the tiny bulbs.

STEP THREE:

Next, prepare your Flock Transfer Sheet by cutting it down to the size of your shadow box. Die-cut the word “kiss” or whatever sentiment you desire from the center of the flock transfer sheet. Attach the foiled Clear Toner Sheet to the back of the Flock Transfer Sheet so that you can see it through the cut-outs.

Hint: For added dimension, add extra layers of foiled Clear Toner Sheets with foam tape in between the layers. Read to the end to see a short video clip of the dimension. I used three layers.

STEP FOUR:

Finish up your shadow box by adhering the Flock Transfer Sheet piece to the shadow box and use it as a canvas for your mixed media art. I added bits of trim, die-cuts, paint, and fabric pieces to the front using Fabric Fuse Liquid Adhesive. I also used Glitz Glitter Gel. Attach the fairy light battery pack to the back of the shadow box so you can turn lights on and off as desired. I know for me, mixed media projects are more about the process than the result. And while I do love the result, a mixed media project is my kind of therapy.

Hint: Sometimes less is more . . . but I’ve never found that to be the case!

I hope you enjoyed this process as much as I enjoyed creating it.
