Halloween Tote Bag

Hello fellow crafters! Gail here from Boo and Lu. Today I am sharing with you a special Halloween tote bag that I sewed for my daughters.

Trick or Treat was canceled this year (2020, am I right??) so I will be setting up a candy scavenger hunt for my kids instead. To make the occasion a little extra special I wanted to sew them some new totes that they can use to collect their treats. Not a big trick or treat fan?? Here are some other ways you can use this bag: reusable grocery bag (use fun seasonal prints and swap them out each month!), store an extra change of your kid’s clothes in the car, bring it on vacation or to the beach with you to hold your goodies, the possibilities are endless!

I decided to let my girls pick out the fabric that I used and they chose a knit fabric (stretchy fabric). The pattern I was using called for woven fabrics (non-stretchy fabric) but that’s okay! That’s where my most favorite HeatnBond product of all time comes in, fusible interfacing! (Y’all, I’m not exaggerating. I have SO much fusible interfacing on hand at all times. I buy it any chance that I get because I use it that much. I primarily sew garments and it is a necessity, in my opinion). Instead of worrying about fabric type, I chose to use interfacing to essentially make my knit fabric into a woven fabric. I mean, not really, but it gives it the same non-stretching properties that a woven fabric would have, and that’s exactly what I needed!

Supplies:

Instructions:

Cut your fabric per the tutorial but you will also cut out 4 pieces of interfacing using the Main Fabric/Complimentary Fabric measurements as well as 2 pieces using the strap measurements.

Fuse your interfacing to the wrong side of all of your pieces.

Now head back to the tutorial over on the Sunflower Seams website and finish up your bag by following her tutorial.

That was easy, wasn’t it? Now you have the cutest little tote bag to show off!

I really love how soft this bag turned out using the knit fabric. I think I’ll keep making bags using knits and interfacing from now on!

Happy Sewing, xoxo Gail
