Gold Leaf PlacematsHi there, it’s Amy  from Sew Incredibly Crazy.  Have you noticed that everywhere you look there is a little splash of gold in everyday decor?  I am here to show you how to make these super easy placemats with a little added bling.

So here is what you will need..

Supplies:  to make one placemat

1   iCraft® Deco Foil™ Hot Melt Adhesive sheet

Gold Deco Foil™

Gold Dot fabric cut :

          one – 12″ x 11 1/2″

two – 2 1/2″ x width of fabric for binding

Gold Houndstooth cut:

          two – 1 1/2″ x 5″

          two – 1 1/2″ x 12″

White fabric cut:

          one – 5″ x 10″

          one – 14″ x 20″ for backing

1 piece of batting 14″ x 20″

First, use a full sheet of  iCraft® Deco Foil™ Hot Melt Adhesive sheet and  adhered it to a sheet of Gold Deco Foil™ .  Instead of using my iron, I ran it through my laminator.  I actually did this a few times to make the gold not as metallic, but  more earthy looking.

Next,  print out you favorites leaf patterns.  You could also use the real thing to sketch around.  Trace around the paper side up, foil side down.  Position in an eye pleasing manner.  (I’ll tell you why in a bit.)

Carefully, cut around the leaves using a sharp blade.  Stay on the lines.  This needs to be as neat as possible.  You will see what you can do with the remainder of the gold sheet. You could also use your home cutting machine instead of using templates.

Results are two pretty little leaves and their silhouettes on the gold sheet.

Now, off to the sewing machine.

placemats 5

Take your  two  Houndstooth  1 1/2″ x 5″ pieces and sew them on opposite sides of your white fabric.

placemat 6

Repeat with the remaining Houndstooth pieces.

placemats 7

Attach your white and Houndstooth piece to your Dot fabric.

placemats 8

Using SpraynBond® Basting Adhesive, make a quilty sandwich with your placemat top, the batting, and the backing.  And then quilt away.

placemats 9

Add your binding.

Now for the fun part, press you leaves onto the white fabric.

And you have a beautiful placemat to adorn your fall table.

So you don’t  waste the beautiful gold leaf silhouettes, you can follow the same instructions, cut the silhouette piece down to size and make another placemat.

That is beautiful. I like the negative one as much as the leaf one.

Great idea. These placemats look like they came from an upscale department store. Beautiful, Amy!

We recommend hand washing or gentle wash…line dry for any of the items with our iCraft Deco Foil products.
