Hi everyone!  It’s Kim Lapacek of Persimon Dreams here!  I’m back with the ninth Mystery ‘Block of the Month’  featuring DecoFoils!

block of the month thermoweb button

If you haven’t joined in the fun yet don’t worry – it’s not too late!  These blocks are all 8-inches and go together really quickly. Each block will be whimsical and fun and a perfect way to use up your scraps.  In the end you’ll have twelve 8-inch blocks that will make an adorable wall hanging OR you can use the blocks to make mini quilts, table runners and pillows!  Feel free to copy the button above and add it to your blog to share with everyone the fun we’re going to have with this quilt along.

Okay – time to reveal the ninth block … I’ll admit … a friend recommended doing a “June Bug” for this months block of the month and I was all in … until I had to actually draw a bug.  They’re just not my favorite thing (although I tried to hide that from my kiddo’s as long as possible so they’d be the one to handle any bugs we ran into in the house … I hid it from one of the three and I”ll take that!) so I switched things up a bit and went a different direction.

Supplies:

  • “Foiled Rainbow Block” template PDF
  • Sky – 6.5″  x 8.5″ fabric
  • Ground– 2.5″ x 8.5″ fabric
  • Clouds (scraps of blues)
    • Clouds: (1) 3.75” x 2.25”, (1) 3.0” x 2.0”
    • Heat N Bond® Lite: – just under (1) 3.75” x 2.25”, (1) 3.0” x 2.0”

Directions

Start by piecing the background of our block this morning.  Take your 6.5″ x 8.5″ piece of sky fabric and sew it to the 2.5″ x 8.5″ piece of ground fabric.  I was super excited to have found the perfect sky/cloud fabric for this block!

Press towards the ground fabric.

Now – take the templates you printed out after you downloaded it for free from my Craftsy pattern page and trace the clouds on to the corresponding Heat n Bond® lite pieces.  Trim around the shapes but not too close to any lines.

Press each Heat n Bond® lite shape to the wrong side of the corresponding fabric.  Cut each shape on the lines you drew.

Peel the fusible paper off each fabric piece.  Do this now so you don’t forget to do it before you do your final press.

Trace the rainbow section onto iCraft® Deco Foil™ Hot Melt Adhesive.  At this point, cut out the Deco Foil™ Hot Melt Adhesive for the rainbow.

preliminary layout

Place this rainbow piece and the clouds onto the background fabric to make sure everything’s going to fit in a way that makes you happy.

For this block the foil will be fused first. Take a Pressing Sheet and lay it over the rainbow. Press for 30 seconds.   Let the Deco Foil™ Hot Melt adhesive cool down.  Seriously, let it cool down.

Let it cool down even more.  And once it’s 100% cooled down, peel the paper off.

Lay pieces of section of rainbow DecoFoil over the rainbow shape.

Take a Pressing Sheet and lay it over the DecoFoil.  Press for 30 seconds.  Let it cool down.

Once it is completely cooled down, peel the decofoil off the block.  Voila!

Now fuse the clouds.  Make sure the heat n bond lite paper is pealed off the back of the clouds before you press them down.  cloudsSince there is already DecoFoil™ on this block you will take a Pressing Sheet and lay it over the rainbow and the clouds to fuse. Press for 30 seconds.  Rainbow Foiled Block

The final step is to stitch around each of the pieces you fused down with the Heat N Bond® Lite Fusible.  I free motion quilted around the edges of the cloud … twice.  Why twice?  Well – I like how wonky the feel is with free motion quilting and if I go off a little on the first round by adding a second round it just adds to the “wonky” feel and makes any mistakes looks like they were meant to be.

You now have beautiful “Foiled Rainbow” Block!

If you’ve followed along so far you should have six blocks!  If not … it’s not too late to join in!  Here are the eight blocks -“Wish Upon an Apple Tree“, “Jack-O-Foil“,  “House of Foil” , “Foil Covered Branches”, “Hearts of Foil”, “Foiled Egg”, “Foiled Cake,” “Mai Fleur Foil Flowers” and “Foiled Rainbow”I have shared with you so far.  We’re over half way there!
