Therm O Web Heat n’ Bond Iron-On Adhesive
Floss: DMC
Other: Fabric, Felt, Buttons
Applique work has always been a little tricky for me in the past with all that pinning of fabric and hoping the pieces won’t slip around as you stitch. But with the help of Therm O Web’s Heat n’ Bond Iron-On Adhesive, piecing applique work is an absolute breeze, even on tiny pieces like this little owl beak.
First thing you need to do is measure the width and length of your cell phone. Measuring the length is easy, but don’t forget to include the side widths in your final measurements. Once you have your figures, add in an extra 1/4″ for seam allowances. My cozy fits my iPhone 4S, so if you have the same phone, you can print my pattern and use it as is. For the rest of you, modify your body back and front to fit your own measurements. Then use the pattern for the rest of the pieces.
Cut out back and front body pieces from felt, and set aside. For the rest of the body pieces (wings, eyes, and beak), cut out small pieces of fabric or felt, as well as small pieces of the iron-on adhesive sheet.
Preheat iron to medium heat, no steam. Place adhesive on back of the material to be bonded. The paper liner should face up.
Place and hold iron on the paper line for 2 seconds. Repeat until the entire surface is bonded. Allow to cool.
Cut fabric and felt to size or shape needed. Peel off the paper liner.
Place material, adhesive side down, on top of project. Press and hold iron for 6 seconds on each section until the entire piece is bonded.
Hand or machine sew along edges. Add buttons for eyes.
