This cold weather is tiring and I can’t wait to get outside and plant flowers.  Here is an easy way to bring the garden inside and it’s a great way to decorate for Easter too.  In fact, one of these little wall planters would make the perfect Easter gift or consider creating these for May Day baskets too.  These wall baskets in seasonal colors like the ones found in Camelot Fabric’s Kaleidoscope collection brings spring indoors and the fabrics are a dream to sew with.

Spring Wall Planter Instructions:

Step 1:

outsidebasketlayout

Layout the 2 1/4″ squares with the 5 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ rectangle as shown and stitch together with 1/4″ seams.  This is the outside of the basket.  Next, press it and bond the Heat-n-Bond® – Craft Extra Firm Fusible Interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric.

Step 2:

hangingloop

For the hanging loop, fold the 1 1/2″ x 3″ fabric rectangle in half lengthwise and press to form a crease in the center.  Now, unfold the rectangle and press the two edges to the center crease and press.  Next fold this unit in half again and stitch close to the edge.  Make a loop as shown and stitch this loop to the center of one side of the patchwork 1/8″ from the edge.

Step 3:

liningstitching

Bond the Heat-n-Bond®  – Fusible Medium Weight Interfacing to the wrong side of the 7 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ lining fabric.  Fold both the lining piece and the outside basket fabric in half with right sides together and pin, matching seams on the outside fabric.  Now stitch 1/4″ from the edge of both sides of the basket fabric.  For the lining, one side is stitched 1/4″ from edge and the other side is stitched 1/4″ from edge one inch down from the top, leave a 3″ opening, and then stitch the bottom 2 1/4″ of the side. This opening is for turning later.   Be sure to back stitch at the beginning and ending of all stitching.

Step 4:

squarecorners

Square the corners on the outside and lining of the basket by flattening the bottoms to form triangles at the seams.  Center the seam in the triangle, measure 1 1/2″ from the end of the seam, and mark the triangle on each corner with an erasable pen.  Stitch on all 4 marked lines.   Turn the lining right side out.

Step 5:

olisowiththehandle

To prepare the basket handle, bond the 2″ x 8″ interfacing to the wrong side of the 3″ x 8″ piece of fabric centering it in the middle.  Press the edges of the fabric over the interfacing, then fold the handle in half lengthwise and press it.  Stitch 1/4″ from the edge lengthwise on both sides of the handle.

Step 6:

handleinbag

Slip the handle inside the basket fabric.  Stitch the handle 1/8″ from the edge of the basket fabric centering each end on each side seam of the basket fabric, right sides together.

Step 7:

pinnedtop

Slip the lining into the outside of the basket and pin around the top, matching seams.  Stitch 1/4″ from the edge around the top of the basket.  Turn the basket right side out through the opening in the lining.  Push corners out and then slip stitch or take a narrow machine stitch to close the opening in the lining.  Tuck the lining into the basket and stitch around the top of the basket 1/4″ from the edge.

plant

The final step is to slip a 4″ potted plant into the basket and hang it on the wall.

This would be a sweet little Easter basket if the hanging loop is left off.  Just fill it with your favorite goodies.
